Why Do We Need Calcium?
Calcium is probably the most widely talked about mineral for daily nutrition. Simply put, every part of our body demands calcium. It is essential in building strong bones and teeth, as well as muscles and organs. There are many types of calcium on the market today, and each one has its own unique properties. For a calcium supplement to be effective, it must be bioavailable, or in other words, it must be absorbed and utilized by the body at an accurate and predictable rate. Unfortunately, using the wrong type of calcium can leave your body short on desired results.

A Superior Source Of Calcium
Key factors to a healthy bone structure include a balanced diet, weight-bearing exercise, reduction and/or elimination of smoking and alcohol, and a quality source of calcium. Vinco’s OsteoSheath® and OsteoSheath® 4 not only contain three bioavailable forms of calcium (MCHC, Calcium Amino Acid Chelate, and Calcium Citrate), they also contain Chelated Magnesium, Vitamin D, and trace minerals Manganese, Copper, Zinc, Boron, Silicon, Molybdenum, and Vanadium.
These ingredients make Vinco’s OsteoSheath® and OsteoSheath® 4 superior sources of calcium.

Osteoporosis is often called the “silent disease” because bone loss occurs without symptoms. Bones are active, living tissues. They are a matrix comprised of protein and collagen fibers to which various minerals become attached. On a daily basis, our bones are continually being dissolved and rebuilt. It is part of a normal process where old bone tissue is replaced with new.

As we age, our body’s ability to rebuild new bone is surpassed by the rate at which bones are being dissolved. The result is an unhealthy bone loss condition called osteoporosis. There are no sudden signs of osteoporosis. This process of losing bone will usually proceed undetected until pain, physical changes, fractures and/or complications appear. Due to this silent progression, osteoporosis can claim as much as 40% of peak bone mass before anything substantial is done to correct it.

Dissolution Summary
Many have been hearing about ways to check the dissolution of a calcium supplement by placing a tablet into a container of water and vinegar to see how long it takes to dissolve. Actually, not only is this an inaccurate representation of dissolution, but the enteric design of Vinco’s OsteoSheath® will not allow it to dissolve in these mediums. Our product has been designed for intestinal absorption, meaning that it will not be damaged in the acidic environment of the stomach.

If you are looking for a way to see how the OsteoSheath® that you are buying is going to dissolve, place a tablet in a mixture of baking soda and water. This too is not completely accurate and it does not incorporate the heat or motion found in the gut, but you will be able to see the tablet dissolve in a medium that more closely represents the appropriate area of the body where the absorption is supposed to take place, the intestines.

Bioavailable Sources of Calcium
(Microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite, Calcium Amino Acid Chelate, and Calcium Citrate) It has been firmly established that high calcium intake promotes bone health.1 As an aid to bone health, daily intake of calcium supplements typically range from 1,000 to 1,200 mg. In order to be effective, this daily dosage must be derived from a bioavailable source. This will ensure a predictable and accurate rate of absorption. MCHC, Calcium Amino Acid Chelate and Calcium Citrate are all bioavailable sources of calcium, and are also the key ingredients in Vinco’s OsteoSheath® and OsteoSheath® 4. While there are other sources of calcium available, such as Coral Calcium and Calcium Carbonate (i.e. antacids), none are as beneficial for bone health management.

Microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite (MCHC)
A true MCHC product is a whole bone food. What this means is that MCHC is a complete matrix of ingredients as opposed to a single chemical. The active constituent, or main component of MCHC is a highly bioavailable calcium compound. MCHC is not merely a simple dietary supplement, rather it is regarded as having specific effects on bone metabolism and therefore offers a greater likelihood of calcium utilization by the body.

MCHC is considered a highly biologically available form of calcium because it has been proven to rebuild bone in patients on corticosteroids with existing bone loss.(2,3,4) Additionally, in a study of three different sources of calcium, related to healing bone defects, MCHC was the only calcium that resulted in bone healing.(5) These studies indicate that the calcium utilization from MCHC is very high.

Calcium Amino Acid Chelate
In Calcium Amino Acid Chelate, calcium is actually bound to an amino acid. The result is that as the amino acid is pulled through the intestinal wall, and so too is the calcium. This ensures a quality delivery system with predictable absorption. A properly made calcium amino acid chelate can offer one of the best and most straight forward approaches to calcium supplementation.

Calcium Citrate (Krebs Cycle Chelate)
Calcium Citrate is another bioavailable form of calcium with several advantages. Perhaps the most important of these is its absorption rate. Clinical tests have shown that Calcium Citrate is absorbed into and beneficially utilized by the body at a much higher rate than that of calcium carbonates, i.e. antacids. In fact, the rate of absorption and utilization has been shown to be almost ten times better. Calcium Citrate can be especially important for those individuals who possess inadequate hydrochloric acid levels in their digestive tract. This is due to the fact that, unlike antacids, the absorption of Calcium Citrate is not dependent upon acid. Additionally, Calcium Citrate has been shown to be much more tolerable by individuals who have a history of kidney stones.
