Preparations of the Boswellia plant have been used in traditional Indian medicine for joint health for hundreds of years. It is derived from the gum resin of the Indian frankincense plant. Its usefulness is thought to be due to its ability to help support normal joint function. The naturally occurring boswellic acids in the plant are thought to be responsible for the tissue-protective actions of this extract. Boswellic acids appear to act by inhibiting of leukotrienes, a class of mediators of the body's normal response. Boswellic acids are reported to increase blood supply to joint tissues, thereby supporting normal cartilage synthesis.
